Insurgent Book Summary and Review

Spoilers of Divergent

Tris and Four escaped Dauntless headquarters and are on the run from Jeanine Mathews, head of the Erudites, and the brain-washed Dauntless. They take refuge among the factionless, Amity and Candor, along with other allies, but face problems with both groups because of the danger Jeanine holds and the clashes of beliefs. One of the challenges faced among Candors was the truth serum they were forced to take and a secret Tris had kept from her friends. As she’s confronted by this, Tris becomes a bit suicidal, but is able to stop herself from going through with it. But, during the course of Insurgent, Tris continues to struggle with the worth and importance she places on her life. Their group faces many losses in their journey as they finally return to Dauntless headquarters. Tris and her friends continue to face many dangerous challenges, in efforts to fight back against Jeanine Mathews. The novel is filled with danger, betrayal, humor, and romance, along with huge discoveries that build on top of the world created.

There is no sex nor much talk of it in this novel, but plenty of long kissing and cuddling scenes.

Personal Opinions: Loved the way Tris’ mental health was handled with losing her parents and the struggles with placing self-worth on her life (becoming suicidal at her lowest). I’ve never read a series that touched so deeply on it before, and it helped me connect with Tris and her pain when her character developed and changed so much (want to wrap her in a hug). Was definitely not a fan of the cuddling though, but it’s probably because this was practically my introduction to YA romance, and it dragged on for much longer than middle-grade romance did. I think Roth did a very good job incorporating the romance into the plot, it seemed like an essential sub-plot rather than an unnecessary extra (still don’t like the teacher student thing though!). I also did enjoy learning more about Tobias’ past, but it didn’t seem very deep at some points (the FOUR novella did a pretty good job building off of it though).
